The first week of school was a busy one. We spent much time settling in, organizing desks, learning routines and procedures, and having fun along the way. During morning meeting, we learned new greetings, shared our personality bags, and played games including Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar, Zoom, Hit the Floor, and Rock! Paper! Scissors! Train. Morning Meeting is a time that we spend getting to know each other and building classroom community.
We read several read aloud so including Froggy Goes to School, 1st Day Jitters, Sit Still!, and Have You Filled a Bucket Today? We also started a chapter book read aloud entitled The Year of Billy Miller. My students lat year loved this book It’s told from the viewpoint of a 2nd grade boy named Billy as he goes through his year in 2nd grade at his school in Wisconsin.
The boys and girls also developed some anchor charts to talk about expectations for the year. We discussed what kind of teacher they wanted (yes, someone wants a teacher who speaks British😉), but there were other interesting comments too…a unique personality, keeps to a schedule, fun. We also talked about what makes a good student (after reading the story David Goes to School), personal strengths and things we want to get better at, and rules we should have in school.
Students did a bit of writing, too. On the 1st day, they wrote about the 1st day of second grade. At the end of the week, they wrote about a time they helped someone in their writing journals. They did a remarkable job.
In between all of that, we did some art, took several GoNoodle brain breaks, and had a couple of extra recesses to run off energy. They are enjoying getting to know one another and I see new friendships growing already. I’m looking forward to this year!
I am hoping to update this blog at the end of each school week. Stay tuned for an additional post with photos from the 1st week.
